The Family Is the Sanctuary of Life: Mission Trip Ignites Hearts

From Whangārei to Taupō, hearts were set ablaze this September as Family Life International (FLI) partnered once again with Human Life International (HLI) for a powerful two-week mission trip proclaiming the message that “the Family is the Sanctuary of Life.”

Led by Father Shenan Boquet, President of HLI, and accompanied by FLI’s National Director, Michelle Kaufman, Simon Archer and others, the dynamic mission team travelled from September 13–26, bringing truth, hope, and encouragement to more than 400 people. Following last year’s theme on the dignity of the human person, this year’s mission delved deeply into the vital role of marriage and the family in protecting and nurturing human life — from conception to natural death.

Inspiring a Culture of Life

The mission’s goal was simple but bold: to inform, equip, and inspire Catholics and all people of goodwill — whether long-time advocates or just awakening to the challenges our culture presents.

Father Boquet pointed to the beautiful imagery recently presented by Pope Leo XIV, when he said “families are the cradle of the future of humanity.”  Father noted the warmth and security that a cradle evokes as it holds and supports what is precious inside, illustrating the vital role of the family in restoring the culture so that life and love are embraced as God intended.

Evening programmes and full-day seminars explored topics at both the beginning and end of life with clarity and compassion. Vital information outlining the current situation in New Zealand how we got here provided the backdrop for Father Boquet to present the remedy.  Audiences appreciated the Church’s wisdom presented with warmth and conviction, many remarking that the presentations were “inspiring,” and giving them encouragement “to keep doing their little bit.”

A key highlight was the Auckland Youth Event – Embracing Human Dignity – where many young people participated in Eucharistic Adoration for the first time and also availed the sacrament of Reconciliation — a moving witness to grace at work. One attendee shared, “He touched all our lives with his preaching and teaching.”

Another moment of grace unfolded when a supporter brought along family who supported euthanasia to one of the seminars. After hearing Father Boquet and Michelle’s presentations, the family member left with a complete change of heart — now opposing euthanasia.

These are the kinds of conversions — of heart and mind — that make missions like this so vital.

Building Bridges and Renewing the Mission

The mission was warmly received in both the Auckland and Hamilton dioceses.  Clergy, and seminarians of the Hamilton Diocese were afforded the opportunity to meet with Father Boquet over lunch.  Hosted by Bishop Laurenson and FLI, the time spent in conversation proved to be an edifying experience for all, opening the door to ongoing collaboration.

A strong partnership grew with Auckland diocesan youth leaders who worked closely with Amie Franswah from the Next Generation team to make the Auckland youth event such a success.

Staff and volunteers of Family Life International were especially uplifted by a one-day spiritual retreat led by Father Boquet, providing time for prayer, the sacraments, and reflection on how best to advance the mission of life and family in New Zealand.  It was a pleasure for the leadership team to see all involved encouraged and ready to bring new energy into their work for mothers, families, and the preborn.

Fruit That Will Last

Everywhere the team went, new Friends for Life emerged — individuals and families eager to stay connected and help build a stronger pro-life network in their parishes and communities.

The mission also renewed the fire within Family Life International’s own team, who returned with a deeper conviction that the Gospel of Life must be shared boldly, joyfully, and with love.

Looking Ahead

The fruits of this mission will continue to grow — in hearts, families, and communities across New Zealand.

Partnering with Human Life International gives our efforts here in New Zealand an extra strength and vitality, improving our endeavour to love, protect, defend, and serve life, marriage and the family.

When we strengthen the family, we strengthen society. The family truly is the sanctuary of life.  This mission proved that truth once again.
