Pro-Life World View | June 7, 2024

This week on the Pro-Life World View, we bring you several “Pride” month stories and highlight the hi-jacking of US legislation designed to protect the working rights of pregnant mothers now requiring employers to support them in aborting their children.

Christian Sues in California Over Public Pride Flags

What happens if an employee’s Christian beliefs conflict with their employer’s public support for LGBTQ+ Pride?  This article sheds light on a poignant case in Los Angeles County, where the public display of pride flags on its various premises (including its Fire Department buildings) has led a committed Christian employee to sue his employer.  He is being forced to raise the flag himself or be fired from his role for his opposition.

There are now numerous organizations – here in New Zealand and across the globe – making public statements of support for Pride month and related activities.  Their stance means conflict with an individual employee’s sincerely held beliefs is almost inevitable, highlighting the global relevance of this issue.

Abortion Pill Chemicals, and Aborted Babies in Water Supply?

This short US article is about the horrifying prospect of chemicals used in mifepristone (the “abortion pill”) and the resulting remains of aborted foetuses entering public water supplies.  With an increase in at-home medical abortions using mifepristone, there is a concern that the chemicals and remains of aborted children in water supplies are a threat to public health safety.  Wastewater treatment is generally completed using similar processes globally, so the question logically applies here in New Zealand.

Hide the Pride during Pride Month

There’s a new catch-cry in circles wanting to protect children. “Hide the Pride” describes a key tactic developed by a parent-led group to fight against Pride Month activities in public libraries.  The group says, “Flags, signs, and book displays based on how adults experience sexual attraction and gender identity have no place in an open and public space for children.”  How do you hide them?  Read the article to find out more!

US Catholic Bishops Sue to Stop Biden’s Radical Abortion Agenda

The Biden administration has shoe-horned abortion support into the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) 2022 via an amendment.  The PWFA was designed to protect the employment of pregnant women.  This amendment adds a requirement for employers to make the same “reasonable accommodation” for women to seek elective abortions, effectively giving employers no choice in assisting an abortion-minded woman in this way.

The US Conference of Bishops has reacted by filing suit in the US Federal Court.  Archbishop Broglio commented, “Our commitment to promoting human dignity must include defending the unborn and supporting women in their pregnancies.” Governmental moves to push anti-life policies and laws must always be resisted, and it is great to see the bishops respond so clearly.

Hope for fertility rates… even in bottom of the table South Korea

Low fertility rates have featured in several recent stories.  Now for some hope – even at the bottom of the table, South Korea can benefit from fertility-boosting initiatives. First, a startling insight: South Korea is a leading seedbed for Christian missionaries, and yet Christians have even lower birthrates than Buddhist and secular citizens!  The hope comes through explicit pro-marriage, pro-family evangelisation like the 303 Project.

Ex-Gay Day of Visibility

In another example of creative push-back against the cacophony of pro-gay, pro-gender, whatever noise in Pride month, the Ruth Institute has initiated an Ex-Gay Day of Visibility.

It’s not politically correct to talk about ex-LGBT people. To the gay lobby, they don’t exist, or they’re just lying to themselves or were never really gay in the first place,” said Dr Jennifer Roback Morse, president of the Ruth Institute.

Behind the relentless campaigns pushing for acceptance of certain gender-identity ideas, one can discern an evil intent to make unacceptable the immutable truth about the complementarity of the sexes.  Why? To bleed dry “marriage, man, woman, and the family of all meaning.

The River That Lost Its Rights: A Step Back From Environmental Madness
Gary Isbell – Tradition, Family, and Property

Rivers, rights, and irrationality

In 2021, a town in Colorado resolved to protect the ‘rights’ of a river.  The resolution has now been cancelled because the human need for water – in the face of water shortages – conflicted with the ‘rights’ of the river.   This story called the change “a step back from environmental madness.

If the recognition of rights and even personhood in this way is a kind of environmental madness, then New Zealand has been experiencing this madness since 20 March 2017.  This is the date when the Whanganui River was assigned personhood in an Act of Parliament.  Since then, other natural features have also been so recognised.

Why does this matter?   The Catechism of the Catholic Church says this:

1730 God created man a rational being, conferring on him the dignity of a person who can initiate and control his own actions. “God willed that man should be ‘left in the hand of his own counsel,’ so that he might of his own accord seek his Creator and freely attain his full and blessed perfection by cleaving to him.”

Simply put, inanimate natural features without the ability to reason cannot be properly considered persons and thus cannot have the rights of human persons.
