Pro-Life World View | April 19, 2024

This week on the Pro-Life World View we bring you stories about the consequences of redefining marriage, Italy’s stand against criminalising pro-life advocates, and a story of an abortion doctor who is now pro-life.

New Italian Law Would Increase Opportunities for Pro-Life Advocates
Bridget Ryder – The European Conservative

“We must not criminalise those who are against abortion”

“We must not criminialise those who are against abortion,” said Italy’s Deputy PM.

Italy’s lower chamber has passed a measure which could increase opportunities for pro-life advocates by enabling to work within abortion counselling centres.  The proposed law change, is expected to be ratified by the Senate, and was proposed by Prime Minister Georgia Meloni.

Law 194, which makes abortion legal in Italy and was passed in 1978, is not slated to be overturned.

At the same time, Italy has an increasing number of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists who refuse to perform induced abortions (63% as per 2021 health ministry stats) – see here for more on this aspect.

First came gender dysphoria, now body integrity dysphoria

This bizarre and sad story speaks of the amputation of two healthy digits on a young man because of his “profound distress” over these particular fingers.  His request for the amputation was the result of his research into gender dysphoria, from which he concluded similarities.  The now widespread surgical mutilation of the bodies of many reported to be experiencing gender dysphoria is aided one extent or another, of political, educational and medical authorities.  At the heart of this case and gender dysphoria cases is people’s choice to conform to inner feelings.

Note that the Church has provided clear teaching in this area:

Man is not the proprietor, the absolute lord of his body, but only the one who has the use of it.

Pius XII, Talk to the Medico-Biological Union “San Luca”, 12 November 1944. Discorsi e Radiomessaggi, VI, p. 186

Public magistrates have no direct power over the bodies of their subjects… Furthermore, Christian doctrine establishes, and the light of human reason makes it most clear, private individuals have no other power over the members of their bodies than that which pertains to their natural ends; and they are not free to destroy or mutilate their members, or in any way to render themselves unfit for their natural functions, except when no other provision can be made for the good of the whole body.

Pius XI, Casti connubii, 21 December 1931. AAS, 22, p. 565

Italy’s Catholic prime minister is backing a strict ban on surrogacy

Giorgia Meloni is supporting a tightening of Italy’s ban on surrogacy.  The practice has been a crime within Italy for two decades, and the proposal would make it a universal crime for Italians, criminalising the procurement of surrogate parenting abroad.

PM Meloni believes surrogacy to be “inhuman” and “uterus renting” and effectively treats children like an “over-the-the-counter product”.   Note that the recent Declaration from the Vatican – Dignitas Infinita – is unequivocal in condemning surrogate motherhood as exploitive and a “grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child.”

Italy’s approach is in stark contrast to countries such as the USA where both paid and unpaid surrogacy are legal in most states, and the commoditisation of children has become normalised.

The Predictable Consequences of Redefining Marriage
Dr Tony Rucinski – Coalition for Marriage

Predictable consequences from redefining marriage

Ten years ago, the Coalition for Marriage – a UK based pro family and pro marriage organisation – correctly predicted many of the issues that are seen today following the redefinition of marriage.  Their predictions include:

  • Support for marriage would reduce [see unmarried, and births, and cohabitation].
  • Legal changes to eradicate sex-based language [see here].
  • Schools being forced to teach about same-sex marriage
  • Public sector chaplains fired if expressing belief in traditional (real) marriage [see here]
  • Curtailing of traditional marriage supporters’ freedom of expression [see here]

Similar outcomes are clearly discernible in New Zealand and throughout many parts of the world.

FLI Comment:

It is worth noting that in New Zealand surrogacy is mainly an avenue for the procurement of children for homosexual “couples”.  The current push to change the surrogacy laws here will remove the need for these men to “adopt” the child they consider their own.  Also, proponents are seeking to commodify the process here even more than it already is now.

Remember David Daleiden’s undercover videos about selling baby-parts

This story is about David Daleiden’s latest exposure of Planned Parenthood’s involvement in further attempts to sell body parts from aborted babies.

After his 2015 undercover videos, Daleiden was sued by Planned Parenthood and hounded by state authorities for his actions in revealing the scandal.  Planned Parenthood were never held criminally responsible even though the undercover recordings have been confirmed under oath as accurate.

David Daleiden has now exposed Planned Parenthood’s agreement with the University of California San Diego for the supply of baby body parts in exchange for ‘valuable consideration’.  Since evil flourishes when hidden, Daleiden’s continued refusal to expose such evil is praiseworthy.

50,000 march for life in Poland as its parliament considers legalizing abortion
Walter Sánchez Silva – CNA – Catholic News Agency

50,000 march for life in Poland

Just two days prior to the huge National March for Life, Poland’s parliament had agreed that it will debate four pro-abortion law proposals.

In contrast, the President of the Polish Bishop’s Conference told the March that “life is a gift from God and as such it is an inalienable right of every human being, which is why it must be protected and supported at every stage of its development.”  The Bishops had also requested that every parish pray for the unborn at all Sunday Masses.

It is noteworthy that this March took place on the anniversary of the baptism of Poland which occurred on April 14, in 766 AD.  The day is celebrated as the Day of the Christianization of Poland.

“I Did Hundreds of Abortions, But Now I’m a Pro-Life Doctor”

From time to time we hear great stories of profound changes of heart among doctors and nurses who were abortion providers.  Dr Kathi Aultman was an abortionist who had such a conversion. “I realized I was not only murdering innocent human beings but that I was also hurting women,” she says.

Dr Aultman now defends life through her work through the Charlotte Lozier Institute as a contributing scholar who writes frequently about foetal development and the life of babies in the womb. Her story proves that there is great hope for those who participate in the evil of abortion, that they will respond to the truth and courageously defend the little ones they once denied life.

The European Parliament has just voted to make killing babies in abortions a ‘fundamental right’

In a resolution “on the inclusion of the right to abortion in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights,” the EU have voted to deny babies in the womb their God-given right to life.  Although non-binding, the resolution will still put further pressure on member states like Poland, Malta and Slovakia to remove their legal protections of the unborn.   The Commission of the Catholic Bishops of the European Union published a statement opposing the proposal, saying “the right to life is the fundamental pillar of all other human rights.”
