Abortions in New Zealand rapidly increasing

The number of pre-born children killed by abortion in New Zealand increased significantly in 2023.

A total of 16,214 pre-born children (provisional figures) are reported to have been starved to death, poisoned, or violently dismembered in their mothers’ wombs.

Shockingly, this equates to 44 lives lost every single day.

It is an increase of 2,050 abortions from 2022, where 14,164 were officially reported.

Pro-life organisation, Right to Life, obtained the provisional figures from the Ministry of Health in response to an Official Information Act request.  The official Abortion Services Annual Report detailing the final approved statistics will likely be published in October 2024.

Early Medical Abortion

Early Medical Abortion (EMA), a drug cocktail of Mifepristone and Misoprostol, was the method of choice, with 62% (10,043) of them making up the reported numbers.

With barriers to the provision of this lethal drug cocktail removed, its use is increasing substantially.

It is now available over the phone to anyone in New Zealand via the Decide telehealth service provided by Heath New Zealand, Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa (formerly Family Planning) and Magma Healthcare Ltd. Anyone can obtain the pills and receive a prescription or have the drugs couriered to their door.

Mifepristone is an anti-progesterone, blocking the pregnancy-supporting hormone progesterone.

Progesterone prepares the womb for implantation of the newly conceived embryo and provides sustenance as growth rapidly occurs. Mifepristone is the first pill taken in a medical abortion.

If a woman changes her mind, the abortion may potentially be reversed by the administration of a progesterone protocol, which undoes the effect of the Mifepristone. It is a regimen that abortion activists vehemently oppose.

Misoprostol is used off-label in New Zealand for several obstetric and gynecological purposes, one of them being abortion, as it produces cramping. This drug expels the pre-born child, who may or may not be dead.

Don’t stop protecting mothers and babies

New Zealand is swiftly hurtling towards the high abortion numbers witnessed in the earlier part of this century. Abortions peaked in 2003, with an astonishing 18,511 reported.

The people of life must double down on their efforts to protect mothers and babies from the danger of abortion. Our prayers, education, and compassionate practical support are needed today more than ever before. At this stage of history, the battle for lives will not be won in the political sphere; it will be won one heart at a time and on our knees, in courageous witness, and through our acts of love and service.
