This week on the Pro-Life World View we bring you a good news story about how gene therapy is helping some children born deaf to hear, the sad story of a woman who has gone public about her scheduled death by euthanasia here in New Zealand, the problem of Catholics using contraception, and much more.
Gene Therapy: Children Born Deaf Gain Hearing
This wonderful story describes the development and successful use of a wholly ethical form of gene therapy which is resulting in some children born totally deaf gaining hearing ability. The number of children successfully receiving the therapy is tiny so far, but the results are very encouraging.

Canadian politician sparks pro-abortion outrage over his Mother’s Day tribute
The comments by Bruce Banman giving rise to the outrage was that motherhood begins “from the moment of conception.”
Banman, a Member of the (British Columbia) Legislative Assembly, was vigorously attacked by pro-abortion lobbyists both online and via press releases, accusing him of using “anti-choice dog whistles.”
The outrage of the pro-abortion lobby says it all. They are frightened of the truth because it’s so persuasive.

Why Catholics use birth control
Daniel Payne – Catholic News Agency (CNA)
Why do so many Catholics use contraception?
This thoughtful article draws on solid data and expert insight to explore underlying reasons for the astonishingly high use of contraceptives by Catholics. A central theme is that Church teaching has not changed, but “too many priests have stopped speaking on the birth control issue.” In such a void, the culture we live in imposes itself. It is described as a ‘crisis of catechesis.’
Reflecting on these issues, Michelle Kaufman of FLI comments:
“Pope Saint Paul VI gifted us with a compassionate and profound summary of Church teaching and insights on the God-given role a husband and wife have in guarding and treasuring their fertility, and in co-creating with God new human life. His encyclical Humanae Vitae expresses clearly these truths, which not only leads to the flourishment of husband and wife and their children, but benefits the whole of society.”

‘We Are Salt to the Earth’ – Press Release

Catholic archbishop’s denouncement of ‘transgender lobby’, legal abortion, euthanasia, same-sex marriage, heavily criticised

Tasmanian Archbishop under attack for his Pastoral Letter
On May 14, Archbishop Julian Porteous wrote to the faithful of Tasmania entitling his letter “‘We Are Salt to the Earth’: Pastoral Letter on religious freedom.” In an article in the ABC news website, his letter has come under attack for his “denouncement of ‘transgender lobby, legal abortion, euthanasia, same-sex marriage.” The extraordinarily partisan ABC story provides a stark illustration of both the attitudes and the forces at work that the Archbishop has spoken of.

British woman to be euthanized in New Zealand urges UK to change its laws on assisted dying

New Zealand judge: Parliament must decide on euthanasia
Michelle Kaufman – LifeSite
British woman has booked to die in New Zealand
The subject of this story is a terminally ill woman who has opted for euthanasia in New Zealand on 22 May. She has dual British and New Zealand citizenship but lives in New Zealand, and is therefore legally permitted to seek euthanasia under the End of Life Choice Act. The woman is using her scheduled death to campaign for change in the law in the United Kingdom. Thankfully, euthanasia and assisted suicide are still prohibited in the United Kingdom, but supporters for it are campaigning vigorously.
The article clearly illustrates how mainstream media can be used to influence the public and political debate on euthanasia and assisted suicide.
FLI National Director, Michelle Kaufman commented that in New Zealand we saw similar media tactics stating that “Lecretia Seales levied the media significantly in the campaign for the End of Life Choice Act. Her sorrowful story helped anti-life campaigners garner support from the public who naturally felt compassion for her situation. When it came to vote, heartstrings had been pulled, and people were led by emotion, discarding sound reason.”
It is worth noting that later this year the New Zealand legislation will be reviewed. David Seymour, the initiator of the New Zealand law, is on record as wanting liberalisation of the current law.

Disney Still Reeling

Disney Still Troublesome
“Disney should return to wholesome programming and allow parents to decide when their children are taught about sexuality.”
In a recent poll, 71% of adult respondents agreed with the above statement.
Disney appear to be slow to get the message, with their stock market value almost halved since 2021. The article outlines why parents need to be careful about Disney films, and why they are still in trouble.
